Scientific studies on ankylosing spondylitis initiated and coordinated by ASIF

The following scientific studies on ankylosing spondylitis and on consequences of the disease have been performed and the results been published:
 
 Ankylosing spondylitis and pregnancy
Investigator: Prof. Dr. Monika Østensen, Department of Rheumatology, University Hospital, Trondheim  (Norway). 
Method: A questionnaire was published in newsletters of AS societies or sent to female members in Canada, USA and 11 European countries. 939 completed questionnaires were returned. 
Scientific publication of results: M. Østensen and H. Østensen "Ankylosing spondylitis – the female aspect".  Journal of Rheumatology 25 (1998) 120–124.
Patient-adapted publications appeared in newsletters of contributing AS societies.
Car driving with ankylosing spondylitis
Investigator: Dr. Jon Erlendsson, consulting rheumatologist of AS society in Denmark (and AS sufferer), Horsens Sygehus, Horsens, Denmark, in cooperation with scandinavian car producers 
Results published in the booklets ”Bilkørsel og Bechterew” (Danish edition appeared in 1997, 2nd edition in 2000) and "Car Driving with Ankylosing Spondylitis" (English edition published in 1998 with support of ASIF and NASS). A Portuguese edition was published in 1999, a Japanese edition in 1999, a Czech edition in 2002, and a German edition (supplemented with additional contributions on the subject) in 2003.
Comparison of HLA-B27 negative versus positive patients with ankylosing spondylitis 
Investigator:  Prof. Dr. Ernst Feldtkeller, vice president ASIF, München, in cooperation with Prof. Dr. M. Asim Khan (Cleveland, Ohio, USA), Prof. Dr. Désirée van der Heijde and Prof. Dr. Sjef van der Linden (University of Maastricht, Netherlands), and Prof. Dr. Jürgen Braun (Herne, Germany).
Method: A questionnaire was published in the in June 2000 newsletters of the AS societies in Germany and Austria. 1080 AS patients responded.
Scientific publication of results: Feldtkeller E, Khan MA, van der Heijde D, van der Linden S, Braun J: Age at disease onset and diagnosis delay in HLA-B27 negative vs. positive patients with ankylosing spondylitis. Rheumatology International 23 (2003) 61–66.
Patient-adapted publications appeared in newsletters of AS societies in Germany, Austria and Belgium/Flanders.
Survey on vertebral fractures in patients with ankylosing spondylitis 
Investigators:  Prof. Dr. Ernst Feldtkeller (vice president ASIF, München) and Debby Vosse M.D. (University of Maastricht, Netherlands) in cooperation with Jon Erlendsson M.D. (consulting rheumatologist of AS society in Denmark, Horsens, Denmark), Piet Geusens M.D. (Professor of Rheumatology, Limburg University Center, Diepenbeek, Belgium and University of Maastricht, Netherlands) and Sjef van der Linden M.D. (Professor of Rheumatology, University of Maastricht, Netherlands).
Method: Questions on vertebral fractures were included in the questionnaire published in the in June 2000 newsletters of the AS societies in Germany and Austria (see above). 1080 AS patients responded. A second questionnaire with detailed questions on vertebral fractures to be answered only by patients with a history of a vertebral fracture was printed in the membership journals of the AS societies in Germany and Denmark in June 2001. 77 patients responded. X rays of some of the fractures could be inspected.
The scientific results of step I have been published in: Feldtkeller E, Vosse D, Geusens P, van der Linden S: Prevalence and annual incidence of vertebral fractures in patients with ankylosing spondylitis. Rheumatology International 25 (2006) 234–239.
The scientific results of step II have been published in: Vosse D, Geusens P, Erlendsson J, Feldtkeller E, van der Linden S: Clinical Vertebral Fractures in Patients with Ankylosing Spondylitis. Journal of Rheumatology 31 (2004) 1981–1985.
A patient-adapted publication of the result of both steps appeared in March 2005 issue of "Morbus-Bechterew-Journal", the journal of AS society in Germany, Translations have been published in the newsletters of the AS societies in Belgium/Flanders, Denmark, Slovenia and USA.
Survey on efficacy and side effects of NSAID therapy of AS 
Investigator: Jane Zochling (Herne) in cooperation with Martin Bohl-Bühler (Brandenburg and Berlin), Prof. Dr. Ernst Feldtkeller (vice president ASIF, München), and Prof. Dr. Jürgen Braun (Herne, Germany).
Method: Questions on the efficacy and side effects of NSAID treatment were included in the questionnaire published in the June 2000 newsletters of the AS societies in Germany and Austria. 1080 AS patients responded.  102 patients with disc prolapse served as a control group.

Survey on the prevalence of common infections in patients with AS 
Investigator: Jane Zochling (Herne) in cooperation with Martin Bohl-Bühler (Brandenburg and Berlin), Prof. Dr. Ernst Feldtkeller (vice president ASIF, München), and Prof. Dr. Jürgen Braun (Herne, Germany).
Method: Questions on common infections were included in the questionnaire published in the June 2000 newsletters of the AS societies in Germany and Austria. 1080 AS patients responded.  102 patients with disc prolapse served as a control group.
