1st Council Meeting
held on 7–10 July 1989 in Leukerbad (Switzerland)
Participants were delegates from Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, USA. AS societies in the following countries were meanwhile members of ASIF:  Australia, Austria, Belgium/Flanders, Canada/Ontario, Denmark, Germany, Great Britain, Hong Kong, Hungary/Budapest, Ireland, Norway, Portugal, Sweden, and USA. The meeting decided to make a number of changes to the constitution. The were Final constitution formulated. Dr. M. Asim Khan (professor of rheumatology, US delegate, photo) announces article on dangers of smoking for AS patients to be published in member societies' newsletters. Also discussed were problems with life insurances and with car driving. The composition of the Executive Committee elected in 1988 was confirmed. The meeting included an excursion to Zermatt and the Gornergrat with view to the Monte Rosa glaciers (photo).
